I solve the Wednesday version of the New York Times crossword every day during lunch. I am a pretty decent cruciverbalist, but I do have some weaknesses: a notable lack of knowledge about sports and pop culture. I can usually get all the wordplay clues, including words in German/French/Latin/Greek. But ask me what the football team of LSU is called and I draw a blank. Luckily, I sit with some friends at work who’re knowledgeable in these areas, unlike yours truly, and they fill in the gaps in my knowledge.
It was pointed out to me recently that being able to solve the Wed version of the NY Times crossword everyday in under an hour is no mean feat, and as such, I should publicize it. Especially since there are some out there who solve it everyday and post the answers online. You know who you are.
I’ll try to post the crossword I solve every day. I’ve largely automated the process, so if things go well, there should be a new solved crossword five times a week.
Who knows, in a few weeks, I might even actually subscribe to the NY Times and solve the real thing as it comes out!
Without further ado, let’s get to the crossword from January 23, 2008, shown above. One tough answer was “Trajan” for “Hadrian’s predecessor”. How are your Celtic kings? “Decir”? No habla espanol here, unfortunately. I should remedy that. What about “Xout”? Nope, not some Greek or Ionian variant of rout, but simply “Cross Out”. Damn you, Hook & Shortz. My knowledge of Spanish surrealists came up wanting as well, with “Miros” being the last clue left on the grid.
