New York Times Crossword Answers – Dec 3, 2008

Today’s crossword was good. The theme was phrases that started with the letter S, except that the initial S was replaced with a P. This gave us “Paving Grace”, “Plum Landlord”, “Pounded the Alarm” and “Pub Committee”. All awful puns, Blake and Shortz, are you listening?

Proper nouns are always the toughest, since the name could be anything. If the person is only marginally famous, or famous within a subculture one is not familiar with, or obscure enough due to generational differences, good luck! Luckily, we had someone who knew “Zadora” as a surname for “Pia”, and “Count Basie” for “”Jumpin’ at the Woodside” composer/bandleader”. Latin and Greek gave us “Irae” for “Dies” and “Aeneid” for “Old War Story”. Imported Italian music terms gave us “Adagio” for “Slowly”, which this crossword definitely was not. We finished well before the lunch hour was up.
