History has proven the conciquences of complete spiritual decadence. For the past 3-4 month I, as a orthopedic patient in a wheelchair, am in the night intake of the "Leger Des Heils/ het Kompas" in a Dutch town called Gouda. The place is run by a non chritian person called Cobi Boeschoten and her godless team. The homeless night intake pay 3,50 Euros per night. Showers are filthy, beds overused and the food tastes like arse or stink feet. I had a jobrelated accident and have a lot of metal in my ankle and leg, yet Cobi had made a point of throwing me out onto the streets in below zero tempretures daily. This retalliation due to me being outspoken and complaining about double standards of the staff and corrupt misuse of power to worsen the pain and suffering of homless people and more so homeless patients. To make a short story here she was refused until I became angry and said my family donated. money all their lives and you can’t even host my wife for 1 night and all they could say to her is well ok for 1 night only after hearing my wife crying in the background I lost it period lord forgive me but they in the end said if she wants to stay here anymore she would have to go and apply for welfare and they would pay for her stay!! One of the worst employers I have ever worked in one of the managers had been the payroll lady. Now I will say my experience is in Canada, so the US may be very different as it is in many other ways. To address a few things: Yes, officers receive a home to stay in (all the homes that I have seen in my 50 years are humble homes, modestly furnished), but the house/apartment and the majority of furnishings except for self bought or gifted personal items remain the property of the SA. When the officer is transferred or retires they do not keep any of that property, nor are they provided housing. Salaries are extremely low, on average around the $25k mark total for husband and wife. They get a car allowance but they use the vehicles heavily for work purposes, visitation etc. They get some education benefits for their children. These officers (usually couples as they work as a team and it is a lifetime commitment) are on call 24/7. No one becomes a SA officer for the money, it is a calling and a commitment and a low paid one financially. As for the social services aspect, the Thrift stores serve several purposes. The SA aside from the outreach for donations tries to be self sufficient for some programs and freugal in their spending. The Thrift store is an arm of social services, so people they are trying to help (homeless, alcoholic, drug addicted, prostitutes etc) are aided through programs, accepted fully regardless of race, sex, orientation (despite the comments in the original article, the SA does not discriminate against gays, but it does not condone the lifestyle)and sometimes provided jobs in the Thrift stores or other operations. These are the marginalized of our society, if not for the SA they would often have no other options. The rigour around working hours, attendance etc is to instill discipline for the good of the individual who is recovering, not treat them as slaves. They are trying to get them back to being contributing members of society. So if you make a call or visit to a Thrift store you very well could be speaking to someone fresh from the streets, not lifetime members of the SA. As such they may not be smooth talking, well mannered people. Donations also need to be of a certain standard, not everyone's junk can be taken as there is not sufficient room to store it. Only items that are marketable are taken, it is a store after all, not a junk yard. You would be surprised at what people drop off, soiled/torn furniture and clothing, broken toys/electronics etc. Many think that the poor will accept anything despite the condition, this is not the case. As for the stand against alcohol, tobacco, gambling and other vices, please realize that the SA started in London, England in the late 1880's when these things were a major social issue (not much has changed unfortunately). The founder thought it hypocritical to be reaching out to people struggling with these things, trying to show them a better way and then bringing them into congregation with the things that caused their problems in the first place. Hence the view of absinence for Sa members. Sounds like common sense to me. Lastly, the SA is first and foremost a Christian organization. It makes no apologies for that. It is about taking care of the physical and spiritual wellbeing of the individual. It has principles and stands by them, admirable in this day and age but sadly maligned by the original poster as being archaic (choosing not to kill babies is "so 1940's"???? Wow, what have we become?). As stated by others, it is made up of people so mistakes are bound to happen, but to suggest that the SA as an organization is corrupt is simply not true.
