Here’s a tiny excerpt from one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time, ‘The Assignment’ by Martin Myers. Page 34 gives us this gem.
"You mean", said the millionaire with a shudder of revulsion, "that your attire is that of a dead man?"
"Was."
"Is. Was. That's not the point, Spiegel. You are wearing a dead man's suit. Don't you find it distasteful?"
"You inherited your fortune, Mr. Jonas. Do you find using a dead man's money distasteful?"
"It's not the same thing. You can't compare your ancient hand-me-down suit to my family fortune."
"Why not?" asked the junk collector. "Your family fortune is also ancient and hand-me-down, if you will forgive my saying so."
Jonas said nothing, so Spiegel assumed he was forgiven and proceeded to mine the vein he had uncovered.
